Yacht Charter Skiathos
Northern Aegean's quietest island group. 60 beaches, pine-fringed water, Mamma Mia anchorages.
Why Skiathos
Skiathos is the **gateway to the Sporades** and the most overlooked Greek charter destination from a UHNW perspective. The island has **60 beaches** across 49 square kilometres, almost all of them yacht-tender-accessible, almost none of them on the typical Greek charter itinerary. The water reads green-blue rather than the Cycladic Aegean blue, the coast is pine-fringed in a way that feels closer to the Croatian Adriatic, and the **Mamma Mia anchorages on Skopelos** (the church on the rock, the beach at Kastani) are a 90-minute hop from Skiathos. From a yacht perspective, Skiathos works as a base for a 7-day Sporades loop covering Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, and the National Marine Park around them.

When to Visit Skiathos
June, July, September are the prime Sporades weeks. The Sporades miss the strongest of the meltemi (which sits south in the Cyclades) so wind is gentler. Water warms to 23-25°C by July. Most yacht traffic is local Greek charter; UHNW international charterers are still relatively rare here, which is part of the appeal.
George's Insider Tips for Skiathos
- Lalaria beach on Skiathos's north coast is yacht-tender-accessible only. White pebbles, no shore access - perfect for a private swim morning.
- Skopelos's church of Agios Ioannis on the rock (Mamma Mia chapel) is 30 minutes by tender from a Skopelos anchorage. Photogenic; small island walk to it.
- Alonissos National Marine Park has Mediterranean monk seal sightings if you're lucky. Approach quietly and let the captain handle distance.
- Skiathos chora has a small but solid restaurant scene. Marmita and Karnayio are the yacht-set picks.
- The Sporades are quieter than the Cyclades by orders of magnitude. If anchorage privacy is the priority, choose here over Mykonos.
Frequently Asked
About chartering in Skiathos
Where do yachts depart from for the Sporades?
Skiathos is the primary departure port (small but functional marina). Volos on the mainland is also possible. Athens-departure charters reaching the Sporades typically need 10+ days for a comfortable round trip.
Is Skiathos crowded in August?
The chora can be busy, but the surrounding anchorages and Skopelos/Alonissos are consistently quieter than Cycladic equivalents. Yacht charter feels meaningfully more private here.
Can we visit the Marine Park?
Yes. The Alonissos Marine Park is open to yachts; some areas require slower transit or anchoring restrictions. The captain handles compliance. Monk seal sightings happen but are not guaranteed.
What's the Sporades typical 7-day itinerary?
Skiathos (day 1-2), Skopelos (day 3-4), Alonissos and Marine Park (day 5-6), back to Skiathos via Skantzoura (day 7). About 100 nm total with anchorage time daily.
How do we get to Skiathos to board?
Skiathos airport has direct seasonal flights from London, Amsterdam, Vienna and other European cities (May-October). Athens-Skiathos by air is 50 minutes; Athens-Volos by road then ferry is 4 hours.
