What Is TEPAI?

TEPAI (Τέλος Πλοίων Αναψυχής και Ημερόπλοιων) is Greece’s monthly cruising fee for recreational vessels and day-trip boats. It applies to any yacht over 7.00 m that is physically in Greek territorial waters, regardless of flag, ownership structure, or whether the boat is private or commercial.

Introduced in May 2019, TEPAI is now fully embedded in Greek yachting practice. For charter guests, it sits behind the scenes: the obligation is on the owner or operator, but non‑payment can stop a charter from sailing.

TEPAI 2026 Rates By Yacht Length

TEPAI is calculated on overall length (LOA) as shown on the vessel’s Nationality Document or equivalent certificate, measured to two decimal places.

2026 monthly rates:

  • Over 7.00 m up to 8.00 m: €16 per month
    • 7.01 m → €16
    • 8.00 m → €16
  • Over 8.00 m up to 10.00 m: €25 per month
    • 9.58 m → €25
    • 10.00 m → €25
  • Over 10.00 m up to 12.00 m: €33 per month (flat across the band)
  • Over 12.00 m: €8 per metre per month, calculated from the first metre
    • 12.01 m → 12.01 × €8 = €96.08 per month
    • 15.25 m → 15.25 × €8 = €122.00 per month
    • 50.00 m → 50 × €8 = €400 per month
    • 64.00 m → 64 × €8 = €512 per month

Frequently Asked

Frequently asked questions

Does TEPAI apply to charter guests in Greece?

No. TEPAI is legally payable by the shipowner, operator, or their representative, not by the charter guest. On a commercial charter, TEPAI is normally settled by the central agent or owner before the season and does not appear as a separate line item on your charter invoice.

How much TEPAI does a 50-metre superyacht pay in 2026?

For vessels over 12 metres, TEPAI is €8 per metre per month, calculated from the first metre. A 50-metre yacht therefore owes €400 per month. Eligible commercial yachts can reduce the effective annual cost using the 10%, 20%, and 25% deductions where the conditions are met.

Can I pay TEPAI only for the months my yacht is in Greek waters?

Yes. Owners may select any months, consecutive or not, based on actual presence in Greek territorial waters. The yacht must leave Greek waters during unpaid months. After each paid month, there is a three-day grace period at the start of the following month without extra TEPAI.

What happens if TEPAI is not paid for my yacht?

If TEPAI is unpaid, Port, Tax, or Customs authorities can impose a flat fine based on length, withhold the vessel’s documents, and prohibit departure until both the outstanding TEPAI and the fine are paid. After 10 days, the debt is sent to the Tax Office for forced collection.

Can charter clients verify TEPAI payment before booking?

Yes, and they should. Ask your broker directly whether TEPAI has been paid for the months covering your charter dates and embarkation port. A professional broker will confirm this in writing as part of pre-charter due diligence, alongside insurance and crew certification checks.

Is TEPAI the same as Greek VAT on yacht charters?

No. TEPAI is a vessel-level cruising fee based on length and months in Greek waters, paid by the owner or operator via eTEPAI. Greek VAT is a tax on the charter service itself, paid by the charter client on top of the charter fee, usually at 6.5% or 13% depending on the itinerary.

When is TEPAI not payable for a private yacht?

TEPAI is not due when the yacht is on land, formally immobilised with documents deposited at the Port Authority, under arrest, laid up, or classified as a traditional vessel under the relevant decision. Out of water or formally inactive status generally places the yacht outside TEPAI’s scope.

Can I correct a missed TEPAI month without a fine?

Yes. If you voluntarily pay TEPAI for a past month before any audit takes place, no penalty is imposed. The fine only applies when Port, Tax, or Customs authorities discover that TEPAI was not paid for a period when the yacht was in Greek waters and liable.
