Yacht Charter Andros
The northern Cycladic island closest to Athens - green hills, shipowner old-money, and the easiest Athens-departure 4-day charter
Why Andros
Andros sits at the northernmost point of the Cyclades, just 50 nautical miles from Athens - closer than Mykonos. For Athens-based or short-time visitors, Andros is the cleanest 3-4 day yacht-charter destination in Greek waters. It is also the most under-discovered. Andros is greener than the rest of the Cyclades because it catches more Aegean rain; the central spine has actual forest and mountain springs. The island has been the historical summering home for Greek shipowner families since the 1960s; visiting Andros today means encountering quiet old wealth in the chora, in restored Venetian houses, and in the contemporary art museum (the Goulandris Foundation, one of Greece's strongest private museums). For yacht clients, the anchorages cluster on the south-east coast: Korthi (the main town's harbour), Batsi (the small marina village, easy berthing), Niborio (the deep northern bay), and Apothikes (the wild north-east anchorage). The aesthetic combination of green hillsides + Aegean swimming + old-money discretion is unique in Greek waters.

When to Visit Andros
June through September all work. May and October are surprisingly viable because Andros's geography keeps water temperatures warmer than the open central Cyclades and the island stays green into late October.
George's Insider Tips for Andros
- Andros Chora (Hora) is one of the most architecturally distinguished in the Cyclades - neoclassical mansions from shipowner Andriot families, three small museums, an exceptional waterfront promenade.
- Goulandris Foundation: contemporary art museum in the Chora, world-class collection (Picasso, Modigliani, etc.). Open in summer only. Worth a half-day shore excursion.
- Batsi village marina is the easiest yacht berth - small, friendly, walking distance to 4-5 good restaurants. Reserve 48 hours ahead in August.
- The mountain hike from Apoikia to Stenies (3 hours) crosses springs and forest, ends in a famous taverna. Have the captain repositions to Stenies bay for evening pickup.
- Andros's local product is sausage and goat cheese. The Saturday market at Batsi is the place. The chef provisions there for the rest of the charter.
Frequently Asked
About chartering in Andros
Is Andros faster to reach than Mykonos?
Yes - 50 nautical miles from Athens vs Mykonos's 90 nm. For a short 3-4 day charter from Athens, Andros is the obvious closest destination.
Is Andros developed for tourism?
Less than the rest of the Cyclades. The shipowner-family summering tradition kept the island intentionally low-density. There are no international hotel chains; the high-end accommodation is in restored Venetian mansions or small luxury inns.
Why is Andros greener than other Cycladic islands?
Geography. Andros catches more Aegean rain than the southern Cyclades, has a central mountain spine that retains moisture, and has historical reforestation by the shipowner families. The landscape is closer to the Ionian than to Mykonos or Santorini.
Can we do Andros + Mykonos in one week?
Yes. Athens → Andros (4-5 hours) → Tinos (2 hours) → Mykonos (1.5 hours) is a clean 7-day Cycladic loop. Andros gives you the green-island contrast against Mykonos's exposed Aegean character.
What yacht type suits Andros?
Motor yacht works best for the Athens-Andros transit and provides anchor stability on the south-east coast. Catamaran is family-friendly. Sailing yachts handle the prevailing Meltemi astern beautifully.
