Do stabilisers consume fuel?
Gyroscopic systems run on the generator, so the yacht burns a little more fuel at anchor with them on. The cost sits inside the APA and is small against a week's fuel; the comfort gain is not.
Does the captain decide when to engage stabilisers?
Usually engaged whenever guests are aboard at anchor or in any swell. Captain may disengage in flat-calm conditions to save fuel - the guest can always ask for them on.
Are stabilisers retrofitted on older yachts?
Some are. Gyroscopic units can be retrofitted, and older yachts often carry fin stabilisers only, which work under way and do little at anchor. The fit is stated on each yacht's rate card; ask specifically for zero-speed stabilisation if anchoring comfort is the point.
What are stabilizing fins for yachts and motor boats?
Stabilizing fins are underwater appendages, active or passive, that counteract roll while the yacht is underway. Modern Greek charter yachts increasingly pair fins with zero-speed gyroscopic stabilizers (Seakeeper), which work at anchor where fins cannot. If your party is motion-sensitive, ask for both systems: fins for the passages, gyros for the anchorages.
