Yacht Charter Sporades from Skiathos

If your priority is calm water + family swimming, yes. The Sporades is wind-protected, the bays are sheltered, and the islands are closer together. The Cyclades has more cultural depth and dramatic landscapes but more wind.

Possible but expensive - ~150nm and 1-2 days passage each way. Better to keep the charter within the Sporades or do two separate charters.

June-September. Calm summers throughout. Late September is the quietest sweet spot - pine air, warm water, few yachts.

Four, and they sit close enough together that a week never becomes a delivery trip. Skiathos is the base and the airport. Skopelos is the green one, the Mamma Mia island, with Agnontas and Glysteri on the sheltered south side. Alonnisos holds the marine park. Beyond them lie Skantzoura and Peristera, uninhabited, which is where the best swimming of the week usually happens.

A 30-40m motor yacht out of Skiathos runs €85,000 to €180,000 for a peak week, a 35-45m sailing yacht €75,000 to €150,000, and a 50-60ft catamaran €35,000 to €70,000. Those are market ranges rather than a rate card, because the crewed fleet based this far north is small and the yacht for your dates is sourced rather than picked off a list. Skiathos-based yachts are genuinely limited in number, so availability, not price, is what usually decides the week.

Short legs and sheltered nights, which is the whole reason to come here. Skiathos is the base: Koukounaries on the south coast holds well in four to ten metres of sand and shelters from the northerlies, and Vasilias does the same in five to ten. Skopelos is an hour away, where Agnontas gives all round protection stern-to and Panormos holds in five to twelve metres with a south cove that is protected from every direction. Alonnisos and the marine park sit beyond, and Skantzoura and Peristera are uninhabited. A week never becomes a delivery trip.

Calmer water and less choice. The Sporades sits north of the Meltemi's worst and the islands are close together, so a family that would spend a Cycladic August bracing for wind spends a Sporades August swimming. The trade is fleet size: the crewed yachts based this far north are few, and in July and August availability rather than price is what decides the week. If you want the drama of the Cyclades and the wind that comes with it, go there instead and we will say so.

In practice, for what we do, yes, and the difference is worth a minute. Most people searching for a yacht rental in the Sporades islands are picturing a crewed week: a yacht, a captain, a chef, and no licence or experience required from anyone aboard. That is a charter, and it is all we write. The word rental usually attaches to two other things in Greece, a bareboat you skipper yourself and a day boat out of Skiathos harbour, and we do neither. It is arguably the best-matched region in Greece for one. The Sporades is wind-protected in a way the Cyclades is not, so you are rarely fighting the Meltemi, and the sheltered bays around Skopelos and Alonnisos are shallow enough that a catamaran's 1.5m draft earns its keep. A 50-60ft catamaran with 4 cabins and 3-4 crew is the standard family week here.
