How do you verify a yacht charter broker's credentials?

There is no single licence that makes a charter broker legitimate. There are four independent checks: search the broker association's own member directory rather than trusting a logo, ask which contract the charter will be written on, ask for the registered legal entity and look it up in its jurisdiction's public register, and look for coverage the broker did not commission themselves.

How do I check if a yacht charter broker is MYBA certified?

Search the association's published member directory directly. Note the distinction that is often blurred: using the MYBA standard charter agreement, which is the Mediterranean contract framework, is not the same as holding MYBA membership. George Yachts uses MYBA-standard contracts and is an IYBA Charter Active Member; we are not MYBA members and do not claim to be.

Why does the charter contract framework matter?

The MYBA Charter Agreement fixes who holds the deposit, what the Advance Provisioning Allowance covers, how cancellation is treated, and what happens if a yacht becomes unavailable. A broker who cannot name the contract, or who wants to write on their own paper, is asking you to give up the protections the standard exists to provide.

Ask for the registered entity, its jurisdiction and its registration number, then check that jurisdiction's public register. A trading name is not a company, and you want to know who you would be suing and in which country. The method

The four checks, in short

There is no single licence that makes a charter broker legitimate, which is exactly why the question is asked so often. What exists is four independent checks, each of which can be done in a few minutes and none of which relies on taking the broker's word for it. 1. Check the broker association membership directly, at the source

Do not accept a logo on a website. IYBA and MYBA both publish searchable member directories, so open the association's own site and search the company name. A membership claim that cannot be found in the association's directory is not a membership. George Yachts is listed as an IYBA Charter Active Member. We are not MYBA members, and we say so plainly: what we use is the MYBA standard charter agreement, which is the contract framework the market runs on, and using the form is not the same thing as holding the membership.

2. Read the contract framework before you read the itinerary

Ask which contract the charter will be written on. The MYBA Charter Agreement is the Mediterranean standard, and it matters because of what it fixes: who holds the deposit, what the Advance Provisioning Allowance covers, how cancellation is treated, and what happens when a yacht becomes unavailable. A broker who cannot name the contract, or who wants to write on their own paper, is asking you to give up every protection the standard exists to give you.

3. Find the legal entity that will actually sign
