Yacht Charter Glossary

Superyacht

Also known as: Luxury Yacht · Mega Yacht

Full explanation

The 24-metre threshold for 'superyacht' status is not a marketing convention - it is a regulatory line.

At 24m and above (gross tonnage typically 200+ GT) a yacht falls under the Large Yacht Code (LY3) in MCA-registered jurisdictions, requires a commercial-grade captain, must hold expanded liability insurance, and is subject to safety equipment requirements (life raft capacity, fire suppression, navigation redundancy) that smaller yachts are not. Superyacht size brackets, market vocabulary 2026: 24–35m - 'small superyacht' or 'compact superyacht'; 35–50m - 'mid-size superyacht'; 50–70m - 'megayacht'; 70–100m - 'large megayacht' or 'gigayacht'; 100m+ - 'gigayacht' exclusively. What distinguishes a superyacht from a yacht in chartering terms: dedicated crew quarters (so guests never share corridors with crew), full beam master suite, multiple decks, on-board tender garage, swim platform, water-toy storage, often a beach club and spa.

Below 24m many of these are compressed or absent. Superyacht charter market, Greece 2026: ~80 yachts available, weekly base rates €120,000 to €1,800,000+.

The largest single-week charter ever brokered in Greece is reputed to be €2.4M for a 95m gigayacht in 2024.

Why it matters for UHNW charterers

Calling a yacht a 'superyacht' commits to a service standard, a regulatory regime, and a price ceiling. UHNW buyers who say 'superyacht' usually mean 'discreet, private, with full crew' - but the term has technical meaning. Knowing where the line is matters for legal review, insurance disclosure, and matching expectations.

Worked examples

Lower-end superyacht: 28m motor yacht

Crew of 5, 5 cabins (1 master, 4 doubles), weekly rate €80,000–€140,000 depending on age and refit status. Comfortably hosts 10 guests.

Upper-end megayacht: 75m motor yacht

Crew of 18, 8 cabins, full beach club + helipad, weekly rate €750,000–€1,200,000. Limited Greek fleet - most yachts at this size base in Monaco/Antibes.

Frequently asked

About superyacht

What's the difference between a superyacht and a megayacht?

Convention only. 'Superyacht' covers 24m+; 'megayacht' is informally used for 50m+. There is no regulatory definition of 'megayacht' - both are superyachts under maritime law.

Is every 24m+ yacht a 'superyacht' for charter purposes?

Not necessarily for marketing - older or workmanlike 24m yachts may not present as 'luxury'. But regulatorily, yes, every 24m+ vessel is a superyacht under MCA and equivalent codes.

Are superyachts more expensive per metre than smaller yachts?

Generally yes. Cost per metre scales superlinearly because crew size, fuel, and complexity scale faster than length. A 60m superyacht does not cost 2x a 30m - it costs 5–8x.

How fast can a superyacht charter book in peak season?

The top 20 Greek superyachts in July–August are typically committed 12–18 months in advance. Booking by January for the following July is the realistic window. The fleet's deeper tier (40–55m, lower mileage) has more late availability.
