Yacht Charter Glossary

Motor Yacht

Also known as: Power Yacht · M/Y

Full explanation

Motor yachts are the default luxury charter platform.

Without a mast taking up centre-of-vessel volume, a motor yacht of any length has roughly 30–40% more usable interior space than a sailing yacht of the same length.

Engines (twin diesel typically, increasingly hybrid-diesel-electric on new builds) provide consistent speed regardless of wind, which means itineraries can be planned to the hour. Hull types: displacement hulls (most yachts above 30m) cruise at 12–15 knots, very fuel efficient, exceptional stability - the standard for week-long charters. Semi-displacement and planing hulls (some yachts in the 24–40m range, common on Sunseekers, Princesses, Pershings) reach 25–35 knots top speed but burn dramatically more fuel and are less stable at anchor. Why most luxury charterers prefer motor yachts to sailing yachts: speed flexibility (Mykonos to Santorini in 4 hours instead of 12), interior volume, full air-conditioning capacity, stabilisation systems (gyroscopic stabilisers - Seakeeper, Quantum - eliminate roll at anchor), and the absence of the technical complexity of sailing. When sailing yachts win over motor yachts: smaller groups (under 8 guests), buyers who want the sailing experience itself, slower-paced itineraries, and budget-conscious charters (sailing yachts run 30–40% cheaper for equivalent length).

Why it matters for UHNW charterers

Motor yacht vs sailing yacht is the first technical choice a buyer makes after setting budget and dates. UHNW first-time charterers default to motor without knowing why - usually correctly. Experienced sailing-cruise buyers know what they want. The buyer who is genuinely undecided should be qualified into motor for groups of 8+ and for any itinerary with fixed shore-side commitments (weddings, restaurants booked at specific times).

Worked examples

Mid-tier motor yacht charter, 30m, 7 nights, Cyclades

Charter fee: €110,000. 5 cabins, 4 crew. Cruise speed 13 knots, top speed 16 knots. Stabilisers fitted (zero roll at anchor). Total fully loaded: ~€175,000.

High-speed motor yacht, 24m planing hull, Athens Riviera

Charter fee: €55,000. Top speed 32 knots, range to Hydra in 90 minutes. Burns 200 litres/hour at cruise - higher APA proportionally. Right for buyers who want Athens Riviera + Saronic in 4 nights.

Frequently asked

About motor yacht

Are motor yachts louder than sailing yachts?

Under engine power yes - but most luxury motor yachts have excellent insulation. Onboard noise levels at 13 knots are typically 55–60 dBA in the saloon, equivalent to a quiet office. At anchor (engines off, generator running) you hear nothing.

Do motor yachts go everywhere sailing yachts go?

Mostly yes, and faster. Some shallow anchorages (Donousa, parts of Antiparos) suit sailing yachts with shallower draft. Most published charter anchorages accommodate both.

Are motor yachts more expensive than sailing yachts to charter?

Yes - typically 30–40% more for the same length. The premium covers higher build cost, larger crew (often), and more onboard amenity.

What's the most fuel-efficient motor yacht for chartering?

Displacement-hull yachts of 30–45m running at 11–13 knots are the efficiency sweet spot. Planing-hull yachts can burn 3–4x the fuel for marginal speed gain, which is why most luxury charterers prefer displacement.
