Motor Yacht

Motor yachts are the default luxury charter platform.

Without a mast taking up centre-of-vessel volume, a motor yacht of any length has roughly 30–40% more usable interior space than a sailing yacht of the same length.

Engines (twin diesel typically, increasingly hybrid-diesel-electric on new builds) provide consistent speed regardless of wind, which means itineraries can be planned to the hour. Hull types: displacement hulls (most yachts above 30m) cruise at 12–15 knots, very fuel efficient, exceptional stability - the standard for week-long charters. Semi-displacement and planing hulls (some yachts in the 24–40m range, common on Sunseekers, Princesses, Pershings) reach 25–35 knots top speed but burn dramatically more fuel and are less stable at anchor. Why most luxury charterers prefer motor yachts to sailing yachts: speed flexibility (Mykonos to Santorini in 4 hours instead of 12), interior volume, full air-conditioning capacity, stabilisation systems (gyroscopic stabilisers - Seakeeper, Quantum - eliminate roll at anchor), and the absence of the technical complexity of sailing. When sailing yachts win over motor yachts: smaller groups (under 8 guests), buyers who want the sailing experience itself, slower-paced itineraries, and budget-conscious charters (sailing yachts run 30–40% cheaper for equivalent length).
