7-day Ionian itinerary

The Classic 7-Day Ionian Yacht Charter Itinerary

Lefkada → Meganisi → Ithaca → Kefalonia → Paxos and back. Sheltered sailing, daily thermal wind, the family-friendly Greek charter week.

The Ionian 7-day itinerary, day by day

The classic Ionian 7-day route runs Lefkada → Meganisi → Ithaca → Kefalonia (Fiscardo + Assos) → Paxos → Meganisi → Lefkada. The route is shorter (180-220 nm total) and gentler than the Cycladic equivalent, with sheltered cruising water and predictable afternoon thermal wind. This is the Greek charter week we book first-time families on. Day 1 — Boarding Lefkada Marina → Meganisi (Spilia). Most charters board late morning, motor out of Lefkada Marina, transit Lefkada Canal, anchor at Meganisi's Spilia or Atherinos by mid-afternoon. Short Day 1, by design — gives time for the boat orientation and a relaxed first-night dinner. Distance: 12 nm. Day 2 — Meganisi → Ithaca (Vathy or Frikes). Sail south-east 25 nm to Ithaca, the Odysseus island. Anchor at Vathy (large protected harbour, motor-yacht-friendly) or Frikes (smaller, sailor-favourite village). Walk the Vathy waterfront, dinner at one of the harbour tavernas. Overnight Ithaca. Day 3 — Ithaca → Kefalonia (Fiscardo). Short morning sail north-west to Fiscardo on Kefalonia (10 nm, 90 minutes). Anchor in Foki Bay (1 nm south of Fiscardo) — better than the Fiscardo Mediterranean-mooring scrum. Walk into Fiscardo for lunch, swim in the afternoon, dinner ashore at one of the harbour-front tavernas. Overnight Foki Bay. Day 4 — Fiscardo → Assos → Myrtos Beach. Sail 15 nm south along the west coast of Kefalonia. Anchor at Assos for lunch (Venetian fortress, ten-house village curved around a tiny harbour). Afternoon at Myrtos Beach — the Cliffs-of-Pelekas backdrop, electric-blue water, drop anchor 200m offshore (no holding inshore). Overnight Assos or return to Fiscardo for dinner. Day 5 — Kefalonia → Paxos (Loggos). Longest passage of the week: 60 nm north-east to Paxos. Departure 08:00, arrival mid-afternoon. Anchor outside Loggos and tender in. Loggos has 7 restaurants in a 50-metre stretch — the Ionian's best village. Vasilis takes no reservations; eat at midnight or get there by 19:30. Overnight Loggos. Day 6 — Paxos → Antipaxos (Voutoumi) → return Paxos. Morning hop south to Antipaxos (3 nm). Anchor at Voutoumi Beach — the bluest water in the Ionian, pure pebble white. Swim, lunch on board, leave by 14:00 before the Corfu day-charter boats arrive. Return to Lakka (north Paxos) for the evening; dinner at La Rosa di Paxos or Akis. Overnight Lakka. Day 7 — Paxos → Lefkada disembarkation. 60 nm south to Lefkada. Possible to do as one passage (8 hours under motor) or break at Mourtos on the mainland for lunch. Arrive Lefkada Marina mid-afternoon, disembark Day 8 morning. Total round-trip: 180-220 nm, two-thirds downwind under the afternoon thermal.

Sailing distances and timing

Total round-trip distance: 180-220 nm depending on routing. Lefkada → Meganisi: 12 nm (1.5h) Meganisi → Ithaca: 25 nm (3h) Ithaca → Fiscardo: 10 nm (1.5h) Fiscardo → Assos: 15 nm (2h) Assos → Paxos (Loggos): 60 nm (7-8h) Paxos → Antipaxos: 3 nm (30 min) Paxos → Lefkada: 60 nm (7-8h, may be split with Mourtos lunch) The longest passages are Days 5 and 7 (60 nm each). All other days are 1-3 hour passages. The afternoon thermal wind builds from 11:00, peaks 15-18 knots by 15:00 — plan passages to use it as a downwind reach. Morning departures (07:00-09:00) on transit days are standard practice.

Notes from George on running this itinerary

  • Fly into Preveza airport (PVK), 30 minutes from Lefkada Marina. Athens transfer adds 5 hours.
  • Vasilis on Paxos and Akis on Lakka are the must-eat — both take no reservations. Tender in by 19:30 to secure a table.
  • Myrtos Beach holding is poor (sand only inshore). Anchor 200m offshore and tender in for the photo, don't try to overnight there.
  • Frikes on north Ithaca over Vathy for the catamaran/sailing family format. Smaller, quieter, the village dog adopts you.
  • Voutoumi on Antipaxos fills with Corfu day-boats from 12:00. Be there by 10:30 for the photo, leave by 13:30 to keep the magic.
  • Loggos quay has only 4 catamaran-suitable slots. Reserve via the harbourmaster 48h ahead or anchor outside and tender in.

Frequently asked

About the classic 7-day ionian yacht charter itinerary

Is the Ionian easier than the Cyclades for first-time charterers?

Materially. The Ionian has sheltered water, no Meltemi (only a gentle thermal), shorter passages, and an older more family-oriented charter scene. The Cyclades is dramatic and photogenic but exposed, windy, and demanding. First-time charterers should start with the Ionian.

What's the best yacht type for the Ionian route?

Sailing monohull or catamaran. The Ionian is designed for sailing — afternoon thermal, sheltered water, distances suited to passages under sail. Motor yachts work but you'll have spent on a vessel optimised for the wrong conditions.

Can I shorten this itinerary to 5 days?

Yes: Lefkada → Meganisi → Ithaca → Kefalonia (Fiscardo) → Lefkada. Skip the Paxos leg. Loses the Ionian's best village but keeps the route digestible.

Can I extend to 10 days?

Yes: add Corfu (Gouvia Marina + Old Town dinner + Albanian-coast day trip). Lefkada → Meganisi → Ithaca → Fiscardo → Assos → Paxos → Corfu (2 nights) → Paxos → Meganisi → Lefkada. ~280 nm.

Do we need sailing experience?

Not for crewed charters. The captain sails, the chef cooks, you participate as much or as little as you like. Bareboat charters do require an ICC or equivalent certificate.
