The question before the deposit

What Happens If the Weather Is Bad on My Charter Day?

The captain decides, the week is reshaped rather than lost, and in Greek summer "bad" almost always means wind in the Cyclades, not rain. What the contract says and what actually happens.

Last updated September 2026

Why the weather is the captain's problem before it is yours

The contract puts the decision where it belongs. The MYBA charter agreement gives the captain authority over the yacht's movements on grounds of safety, and it does not treat weather as a reason to cancel or claim money back, because a yacht cannot be sold to someone else for the week the wind blows. That sounds hard until you see what it means in practice: a captain who has run the Cyclades for fifteen Augusts knows which bay is flat when the Meltemi is at force 7 and takes you there, and the day you would have spent crossing to Mykonos you spend in the water off Antiparos. What Greek bad weather is. From May to September it does not rain to speak of. The weather is wind, and the wind is the Meltemi: a dry northerly that gets up in the Aegean on its days from mid-July to late August, strongest between Mykonos and Naxos, lighter down the western Cyclades, absent in the Saronic and the Ionian. On a stabilised motor yacht or a well-handled catamaran it is a lively crossing, not a danger; the captains plan around it and the itinerary says "the Cyclades", not "Tuesday, Mykonos". What this house does. Writes a first week in the Saronic or the Ionian for a party that does not want weather as a factor; writes the Cyclades with a captain who knows them for a party that does; is on the phone with the captain on the morning it blows; and says all of this before the deposit, not after. Who you are dealing with. George Yachts Brokerage House LLC is a United States company, registered in Wyoming, with its brokerage desk in Athens, a few minutes from the marinas the yachts leave from. It is a boutique house: one broker, George P. Biniaris, Founder and Managing Broker, a licensed sailing skipper with a powerboat licence valid to 25 metres, handles every file himself, from the first message to the quay on check-in day, and is reachable on WhatsApp at +1 786 798 8798. The house is listed as an IYBA Charter Active Member, writes every charter on the MYBA form of agreement, was featured in Forbes in May 2026, and holds a 5.0 rating on Google. The APA, the VAT at each yacht's certified rate and the gratuity are set out line by line in every proposal, so nothing arrives as a surprise.

When the weather is not a factor

June and September are the calm months in the Cyclades and 15 to 25 percent below peak on most cards; the Saronic and the Ionian are calm all summer. Peak weeks for July and August 2027 are being contracted now, in the autumn of 2026; the five and six cabin yachts go first. Nine to fourteen months ahead for a peak week, six to nine for June and late September, three to four for May and October. Booking early buys first choice of yacht and week rather than a discount.

George's insider notes

  • Ask the captain's name and his Cyclades seasons before the deposit; the answer is the weather plan.
  • Book the Cyclades for the first ten days of July or for September if the Meltemi worries you; book the Saronic or the Ionian if it worries you a lot.
  • An itinerary that names islands by day is a brochure; one that names a region and a captain is a plan.
  • Travel insurance with charter cancellation cover is for your reasons, not the weather's; arrange it before the deposit.

Frequently asked

Questions we get about What Happens If the Weather Is Bad on My Charter Day?

What happens if the weather is bad on my charter day?

The captain decides what is safe and the week is reshaped around the weather; under the MYBA agreement weather is not a ground for cancellation or refund. In a Greek summer that almost always means the Meltemi closing a Cyclades crossing for a day, not the yacht staying in port.

Can I get a refund for bad weather?

No, under the MYBA charter agreement weather is not a ground for refund; the itinerary is reshaped instead. Cancellation for your own reasons is covered by travel insurance with charter cancellation cover, arranged before the deposit.

What is the Meltemi?

A dry northerly wind in the Aegean on its days from mid-July to late August, strongest in the central Cyclades at force 5 to 7, lighter in the western Cyclades and absent in the Saronic and the Ionian.

Will the yacht leave the marina in wind?

Almost always; the captain shapes the route to the lee of the islands. The exception is a port authority gale warning, which in summer is rare and short, and then the week moves a day.

Which waters have no bad weather in summer?

The Saronic, Hydra, Spetses and the Peloponnese coast from Athens; the Ionian from Corfu to Kefalonia; both are calm through July and August.

Who do I call on the morning it blows?

The broker: WhatsApp +1 786 798 8798. This house is on the phone with the captain before you are awake, and the day's plan is in your hands at breakfast.
