Why a motor yacht costs more than the card says, and why that is fine

The base fee buys the yacht and her crew; the week also burns diesel. A motor yacht's APA runs 30 to 40 percent of the base rather than the 20 to 30 percent of a sailing catamaran, because a 27 metre yacht at cruising speed drinks several hundred litres an hour and the Cyclades are not close together. That is not a hidden charge; it is the week's fuel, food, drink, berths and port fees, paid in advance, spent by the captain and settled against receipts, with the balance returned. The VAT belongs to the yacht, not to the broker. Greek VAT on a weekly crewed charter is invoiced at 5.2, 6.5, 7.8 or 12 percent according to the yacht's certification, with 13 percent the statutory ceiling. Two yachts at the same base can land EUR 2,000 apart on the VAT line alone, which is why this house writes the rate next to the yacht's name on every proposal.
