How hiring a crewed yacht in Greece works
Best suited for
- Families and groups of couples with no sailing experience
- First-time charterers who want the week run for them
- American guests who want a United States contract and a broker in Athens
- Anyone who has only ever seen "plus expenses" and wants the all-in number
When to hire for 2027
Peak weeks for July and August 2027 are being contracted now, in the autumn of 2026; the five and six cabin yachts go first. Nine to fourteen months ahead for a peak week, six to nine for June and late September, three to four for May and October. Booking early buys first choice of yacht and week rather than a discount.
George's insider notes
- Tell the broker the month, the party and a budget zone if you have one; "not sure yet" is a perfectly good answer and the reply sets out three zones.
- Ask for the yacht's VAT rate in writing. It belongs to the yacht, not to the broker, and it ranges from 5.2 to 12 percent on the current cards.
- Three or four couples fit a four cabin catamaran; two families with children fit a five cabin one; the six cabin yachts are few and go first.
- The MYBA contract takes 50 percent on signing and the balance with VAT and APA forty-five days before you board on this house's proposals.
Frequently asked
Questions we get about Can I Hire a Yacht in Greece?
Can I hire a yacht in Greece without a licence?
Yes, on a crewed charter. The captain holds the licence and runs the yacht; you need nothing but a passport. Bareboat hire, where you skipper yourself, requires a licence and is a different market that this house does not broker.
How much does it cost to hire a yacht in Greece for a week?
On the current rate cards, from EUR 17,000 a week net base for a crewed sailing catamaran of 15 metres and EUR 17,500 for a crewed motor yacht of 20 metres, from about EUR 22,000 a week all in, with the APA and the VAT included and the crew gratuity at your discretion. Larger yachts rise to EUR 235,000 a week.
How many people can hire a yacht together in Greece?
Up to twelve guests by Greek law, on any charter yacht. A party of fourteen takes two yachts cruising together.
Where do I board?
Athens for the Saronic and the Cyclades, mostly from Alimos marina, about twenty-five minutes from the airport; Corfu or Lefkada for the Ionian. On any day of the week you choose.
How far ahead do I need to book?
Nine to fourteen months for a July or August week, which means now for summer 2027; six to nine months for June and late September; three to four for May and October.
