Why catamarans work for Mykonos

Mykonos in August is hot, busy, and exposed to the Meltemi. A catamaran answers all three. A wide, level deck for the heat, with more shaded living area than a monohull of the same length. No heel and very little roll at anchor when the afternoon wind blows into Ornos, which is why children sleep through it. A shallow draft that lies close to the sand at Kalafati and in the Antiparos channel where a deep keel anchors outside. For a family or a party of six to ten, a 20 to 24 metre catamaran is the sweet spot: four to six cabins, the children safe on flat decks, and an APA of 20 to 30% of the base against 30 to 40% on a motor yacht, because two hulls burn a fraction of the diesel. The week

Seven nights from Mykonos on a catamaran, every night in a lee

Night one, Ornos: board in the afternoon and anchor in 6 to 12 metres over sand with excellent shelter from the north, the tender dock a minute away. Day two, Delos and Psarou: Delos by tender in visiting hours, the catamaran lying off in 10 to 18 metres, then Psarou at 8 to 15 metres for Nammos and the beach service to the boat. Day three, Syros, 25 miles: west in the morning calm to Finikas, 3 to 6 metres over sand, the best Meltemi shelter on the island, Ermoupoli a taxi away. Day four, Paros, 30 miles: Naoussa, 8 to 15 metres, is the prettiest village in the Cyclades and open to the Meltemi, so on a windy day the boat lies at Parikia on the protected west side and the party drives ten minutes to dinner. Day five, Antiparos: five miles to the Despotiko channel, 4 to 9 metres over sand with excellent holding, one of the most protected anchorages in the southern Cyclades in a northerly, and Soros on the south coast, 6 to 12 metres, sheltered from every direction, the clearest water of the week. Day six, Paros east coast: Pisso Livadi, 6 to 10 metres, a fishing village with the fish at the harbour tavernas, Kolymbithres on the way for the swim among the boulders. Night seven, Kalafati, 30 miles: back to the east coast of Mykonos, 6 to 10 metres over sand, the best Meltemi shelter on the island and the least-visited bay, or Ornos for the town. When to book

On the Greek Charter Index the peak July and August weeks on the most requested catamarans commit six to twelve months ahead, and the five and six cabin boats go first because there are fewer of them. June and September are the catamaran months at Mykonos: warm water, a softer Meltemi, the beach clubs open, and rates 15 to 25% below peak on the same rate card with three to four months of lead time rather than a year. July and August are the wind, and the week below is built so that every night has a lee. May and October are the quiet shoulder, the anchorages empty.

Sailing or power catamaran for Mykonos?

Power, ALTEYA, ChristAl MiO 80, Crazy Horse or ALINA, for motor-yacht pace without the roll: Milos is 50 miles from Paros and Santorini 80 from Mykonos, and the power catamaran makes those mornings short. Both carry the same APA logic, 20 to 30% of the base.

Are catamarans good for families with kids in Mykonos?

They are the hull we recommend for families in the Cyclades: no heel, very little roll at anchor, a level deck, a draft that lies close to the sand, and the week above built so that every night has a lee from the Meltemi. For children under ten in July and August we say plainly that the Ionian is calmer; for a family that wants Mykonos, a 20 metre and larger catamaran in June or September is the answer. Does the catamaran go into Mykonos marina?

The week is anchored, not berthed: Ornos or Kalafati for the nights, the tender for the town. Boarding and disembarkation are arranged with the captain, at anchor by tender or alongside where a berth is available on the day; we do not promise marina nights we cannot guarantee, and the wide beam of a catamaran is exactly why.

How far ahead should I book a catamaran for Mykonos?

Six to twelve months for July and August on the Greek Charter Index, and the five and six cabin catamarans go first. Can we start in Athens and reach Mykonos on a catamaran?

Yes, and it is usually cheaper, because most of the catamarans we represent are based around Athens and a Mykonos start adds the delivery on its own line.
