The Yacht in Detail
S/Y BLACK LION is a 30.65 metre Perini Navi sloop from 2012, and she reached the finals of three design awards in 2013: the ShowBoats Design Awards for interior layout and for naval architecture in the sailing class, and the World Superyacht Awards for best sailing yacht between 30 and 40 metres. She won none of them. Being one of a handful of sailing yachts in the world put in front of those panels is the point.
What the 2025 Refit Delivered
A new teak deck, a LORIMA carbon composite mast and fresh exterior paint. A carbon rig on a 31 metre hull is not decoration: it lowers the centre of gravity and stiffens the boat, which is why she sails properly rather than motoring with the sails up.
Nine Guests, Four Crew
Four cabins take nine guests with a crew of four, on 83 gross tons. Nine knots under power, thirteen at the top, and considerably better than that with the wind where she wants it.
The Week She Is Built For
Guests who sail. The Cyclades in July and August have the meltemi, and a carbon-rigged Perini uses it instead of hiding from it: this is the yacht for a family that wants the passage to be the day rather than the interruption to it.

Byron carved his name into one of the columns, and the sunset from the water is the reason to be here rather than in the car park. Two and a half hours on passage at 9 knots.
- Day 2· 22 NM
Cape Sounion→Kythnos (Kolona)
Two and a half hours under way. Kolona is a sandbar with sea on both sides, and the boat lies to an anchor off it.
- Day 3· 33 NM
Kythnos (Kolona)→Sifnos (Vathi)
Vathi is a closed bay with a sand bottom, a pottery village ashore and holding you can trust. Reckon on three and a half hours from the last berth.
- Day 4· 17 NM
Sifnos (Vathi)→Milos (Adamas)
Just under two hours at her cruising speed. Milos was mined for obsidian before anybody wrote anything down, and the colours in the rock explain why.
- Day 5· 26 NM
Milos (Adamas)→Serifos (Livadi)
The chora sits straight above Livadi harbour, whitewash stacked up a rock face. Three hours on passage at 9 knots.
- Day 6· 32 NM
Serifos (Livadi)→Kea (Vourkari)
Three and a half hours under way. The first of the Cyclades and the closest to Athens, oak covered rather than bare rock.
- Day 7· 33 NM
Kea (Vourkari)→Athens (Alimos)
The run back up the coast, Athens on the bow, and the last night alongside. Reckon on three and a half hours from the last berth.
