George's Inside Info

BABALU is the Lagoon 51 with three crew, and at this size that third person matters more than anything on the specification sheet: the cook cooks, the hostess looks after the guests and the boat, and nobody is doing two jobs. Keep her in the Saronic, where eight knots is plenty, and arrive at Hydra early, because the quay fills by six and the alternative is anchoring off and taking the tender in. With water skis sized for children on board, young families are the guests she suits best.

The Yacht in Detail

BABALU, a 2024 Lagoon 51 for eight

BABALU was launched in 2024, and she is a Lagoon 51 in the layout I like best for charter: four double cabins, each with its own bathroom, rather than a fifth squeezed in. Eight guests, four couples or two families, with room to spare.

The 51 opens at the stern into a broad swim platform that works as a balcony on the water. On BABALU it is where breakfast ends and the swimming starts.

Three crew for eight guests

A captain, a cook and a hostess, in their own quarters. Three crew on a fifty one foot catamaran is a generous ratio, and it shows at the table and in how the boat is kept.

She has air conditioning, a water maker, a generator and Wi-Fi. For the water there is a four metre RIB with a 40 horsepower outboard, paddleboards, water skis for adults and children, a wakeboard, a two person towable sofa, and snorkelling and fishing gear.

Where she belongs

The Saronic. She cruises at eight knots on twenty five litres an hour, and the Saronic is the water that fits that pace from Athens: Aegina, Poros, Ermioni and Hydra, none of them far apart, with a night under the temple at Sounion on the way home.

For eight guests who want a brand new catamaran, a crew of three and an easy week close to Athens, she is the one.

A Sample 7-Day Route

What a week aboard S/CAT BABALU can look like

Total: 134 NM

  1. Day 1· 16 NM

    Athens (Alimos)Aegina Town

Two hours under way. A working island harbour with a nineteenth century waterfront, and pistachios sold off the quay.

  2. Day 2· 16 NM

    Aegina TownPoros

The channel between Poros and the mainland is a hundred metres wide, and the town sits on both sides of it. Reckon on two hours from the last berth.

  3. Day 3· 12 NM

    PorosErmioni

Ninety minutes at her cruising speed. A working Peloponnese town rather than a resort, and the fish on the quay came in that morning.

  4. Day 4· 11 NM

    ErmioniHydra

Hydra's quay fills by six, so arrive early or lie off Mandraki and take the tender in. An hour and a quarter on passage at 8 knots.

  5. Day 5· 29 NM

    HydraAegina (Agia Marina)

Three and a half hours under way. Agia Marina sits on the east coast facing the sunrise, with a beach you can swim to off the stern.

  6. Day 6· 28 NM

    Aegina (Agia Marina)Cape Sounion

Anchor under the temple, which is what boats crossing between Athens and the Cyclades have always done. Reckon on three and a half hours from the last berth.

  7. Day 7· 22 NM

    Cape SounionAthens (Alimos)

Three hours at her cruising speed. The run back up the coast, Athens on the bow, and the last night alongside.
