When a yacht is described as '40 metres,' the figure refers to LOA.
Every charter price, marina fee, and regulatory threshold uses LOA.
It is the defining specification of a yacht as a commercial object. LOA vs LWL (Length at Waterline): LOA includes bowsprit, swim platform, anchor pulpit.
LWL excludes overhanging structures and is shorter, sometimes by 2-4 metres on larger yachts.
LWL matters for sailing performance calculations; LOA matters for commerce. LOA and price on the Greek Charter Index 2026 (motor yachts): 22 to 25 metres EUR 21,000 to 47,500 a week; 26 to 31 metres 35,900 to 75,000; 35 to 40 metres 59,900 to 150,000; above 50 metres 162,500 to 235,000.
Price scales faster than length because every additional metre adds crew, fuel, and complexity. LOA and marina fees: Greek marinas charge by LOA and by season, at rates each marina publishes; a berth in Mykonos in August is among the most expensive in Greece and is paid from the APA.
Anchoring is free in most Greek waters, which is why the week this house writes sleeps at anchor more often than alongside.
Why it matters for UHNW charterers
LOA is the headline number for any yacht - but it's not the whole story. A 40m yacht with 8m beam has more interior volume than a 45m yacht with 6.5m beam. UHNW buyers should look at LOA, beam, draft, and GT (gross tonnage) together for a complete picture of what 'size' actually means aboard.

LOA: 39.08 m (128 ft). Builder: Maiora. Cabins: 5. Sleeps: 12 guests. Crew: 8. Stabilisers at anchor and under way. Rate card: EUR 98,000 to 115,000 a week. The card carries every one of these lines; the length is the first of them and the least.

Why is LOA different from waterline length?

Does LOA include the radar arch on top of the flybridge?
