Why Athens is the right motor yacht departure for most charters

Alimos Marina is the largest charter base in Greece: roughly 1,200 yachts berthed at peak, 60% of which charter commercially in the summer months. Every itinerary in Greek waters is reachable from here: the Cyclades to the south-east (Mykonos 8 hours by motor, Santorini 14 hours), the Saronic to the south-west (Hydra 2 hours, Spetses 4 hours), the Argolic and further into the Peloponnese. The right Athens motor yacht week depends on the brief. For first-time Greek charterers, the Saronic loop (Athens → Hydra → Spetses → Aegina) is the easiest 4-night week: short passages, sheltered water, all the iconic Greek-village photographs without the Cycladic transit-time. For the Cycladic-set, Athens to Mykonos with an overnight at Kea is the standard 7-day opener; the boat repositions during the night and you wake up in Mykonos. For the longer-week clients, a 10-day Athens → Saronic → Cyclades → Athens covers both worlds. Vessel selection in Athens is the widest in Greece: every yacht type, every size class, every flag is represented in Alimos. The trade-off is that the boat doesn't 'live' in the destination; repositioning the yacht to Mykonos before the charter starts saves the first day at sea but adds a delivery fee. Most charterers absorb the delivery cost.

When to book

May through October all work from Athens. June and September are the discretionary-spend sweet spots: same weather as peak August, 25-30% better pricing, marina less crowded. July and August book 6-9 months ahead for the popular 30-50m motor yachts. Last-minute summer availability is realistic in Athens (more so than in Mykonos or Santorini) because of the marina's scale.

Alimos Marina has 16 piers, confirm with George which pier your boat is on for taxi drop-off. From Athens airport (ATH) the transfer is 35-45 minutes depending on traffic.
First-night options: stay in Athens (Acropolis dinner, board at 11:00 next morning) or sail to Aegina at sunset and have dinner on board. Both work; depends on whether you want city-end or sea-start.
Day-trip option from Athens before boarding: Sounion Cape (45 minutes by car). Temple of Poseidon at sunset. Yacht-set tradition.
Provisioning Athens is by far the best in Greece: Carrefour Voula and the Glyfada food markets stock anything. Brief the chef accordingly.
Greek Easter and August 15 (Panagia) are domestic-travel holidays. Marina ferry traffic and provisioning logistics shift on those days. Brief in advance.

Should we board in Athens or have the yacht reposition to Mykonos?

Depends on flight logistics. Direct flight to Athens + board Alimos: save the repositioning fee, lose the first sailing day. Direct flight to Mykonos + reposition the yacht: pay the delivery fee (€2-8K), start the charter at the destination. Both are common; George briefs based on your specific dates.

What's the best 7-day Athens motor yacht itinerary?

Two clean options. (1) Saronic loop: Athens → Aegina → Hydra → Spetses → Hydra → Athens. Light cruising, all islands within 4 hours. (2) Cycladic outbound: Athens → Kea (overnight) → Mykonos → Naxos → Paros → Sifnos → Athens. Heavier transit, more destinations.
