When to go sailing in Greece
May, June and September are the sailing months: warm, the wind present but moderate, and 15 to 25 percent below the July and August cards. July and August bring the Meltemi to the Cyclades, the week for parties who want it, and the Ionian for those who do not; both commit six to twelve months ahead. October is the Ionian's last good month. Weeks start on any day.
Notes from George
- Children and first-timers go to the Ionian; the Cyclades are for parties who have sailed before or want to learn in wind.
- A catamaran keeps the table flat at anchor; a monohull heels and sails. Choose by how the party wants to spend the evening, not by the brochure.
- Tell the captain how much sailing you want on day one. He will plan a week with four hours under sail a day or forty minutes, as you prefer.
- The APA under sail is the lowest in the fleet, 20 to 30 percent; the diesel line is small and most of it goes on food, drink and berths.
- Fly to Preveza for Lefkada or to Corfu for the northern Ionian; Athens for the Cyclades. The yacht's berth decides the airport.
Frequently asked
Questions we get about Sailing Holiday Greece, Fully Crewed
How much is a crewed sailing holiday in Greece for a week?
From EUR 17,000 net base per yacht for a 15 metre crewed sailing catamaran, about EUR 22,000 all in with APA and VAT. Index 2026 bands: 16 to 19 metre catamarans EUR 18,900 to 48,000, 20 to 22 metres 31,500 to 43,500, 23 to 24 metres 54,900 to 90,000; crewed sailing monohulls of 24 to 31 metres EUR 24,000 to 55,000. Per yacht per week, with the crew.
Do we need to know how to sail?
No. The captain and crew sail the yacht; you are the guests. If you want to learn or to helm, the captain will put you on the wheel in open water and teach as you go. The licence and the responsibility stay with him.
Is this a flotilla holiday?
No. A flotilla is a group of small bareboats following a lead yacht, with the party sailing and cooking. This house writes crewed weeks only: your own yacht, your own captain and cook, your own route. Flotilla and bareboat holidays exist in Greece through other operators at a different VAT rate.
Ionian or Cyclades for a sailing holiday?
Ionian for calm water, short legs and families: Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Meganisi, Ithaca, Kefalonia, with an afternoon thermal and no Meltemi. Cyclades for the wind: 15 to 25 knots from late June between Kea, Syros, Mykonos, Paros and Sifnos, white villages and open water. Both board on any day; the Ionian from Lefkada or Corfu, the Cyclades from Athens.
Sailing catamaran or sailing yacht?
The catamaran stays level, sleeps eight to twelve in four to six cabins and keeps the table set at anchor, from EUR 17,000 a week. The monohull heels and sails, sleeps six to nine, and runs EUR 24,000 to 55,000 at 24 to 31 metres with a crew of three or four. Families choose the catamaran; sailors choose by feel.
What is included, and what sits on top?
The yacht, her crew and their wages are in the weekly price. On top: the APA, 20 to 30 percent of the base under sail, for fuel, food, drink and berths at cost with the balance returned; Greek VAT at the yacht's certified rate of 5.2 to 12 percent; and the crew gratuity of 10 to 15 percent at your discretion.
How long is the flight from London?
About three and a half to four hours to Athens, Corfu or Preveza, with direct summer flights from the main London airports to all three. Corfu and Preveza serve the Ionian yachts; Athens the Cyclades and the Saronic.
