Why Rhodes is Greece's latest-season motor-yacht charter base

Most Greek charter destinations wind down by end-September. Rhodes runs through mid-October. The southern Aegean position keeps water 2-3 weeks warmer than the Cyclades, the Meltemi is replaced by a gentler thermal, and the photogenic Dodecanese destinations (Symi, Lindos, Halki, Karpathos) all stay open. Symi, 15 nm north of Rhodes, is the Dodecanese's most-photographed village - pastel-coloured neoclassical houses tumbling down both sides of a harbour, ten-minute walk from yacht-mooring to dinner. A Rhodes-based motor yacht hits Symi for lunch on Day 2 and stays through dinner. Lindos, on Rhodes itself (1 hour from the marina), is the Acropolis-with-beach combination - the white-washed village beneath a Knights Templar fortress overlooking St. Paul's Bay. Anchor in St. Paul's, walk the village, climb the fortress, dinner ashore. A 7-day Rhodes motor-yacht week runs Rhodes (Mandraki) → Symi → Halki → Karpathos (northern coast) → Tilos → Symi → Rhodes (Lindos). Roughly 250 nm, all sheltered Dodecanese cruising.

When to book

June and September are optimal. October is uniquely viable - Rhodes is Greece's latest-season charter destination. July and August are hot (30-35°C onshore) but the south-Aegean thermal keeps the boat comfortable. May the water is still cool (19-20°C) but the islands are atmospheric.

Symi harbour Mediterranean-mooring fills by 16:00 in season. Arrive by mid-afternoon or anchor outside the harbour and tender in.
St. Paul's Bay at Lindos is the iconic anchorage. Arrive 09:00 for the best mooring slots - by 11:00 day-tripper boats from Rhodes arrive.
Halki is the Dodecanese's quietest island - one harbour-front village (Emborios), three restaurants, no tourist infrastructure. Worth a full day.
Rhodes Old Town for one dinner - walk the medieval Knights Templar streets. The yacht stays at Mandraki marina; you walk into the Old Town in 10 minutes.
Karpathos's north coast (Olympos village) is an hour by car from the south anchorages - culturally extraordinary but logistically demanding. Brief George if interested.

Can we charter from Rhodes in October?

Yes - Rhodes is Greece's latest-season viable charter destination. Water stays 22-24°C until mid-October, the thermal wind is gentle, the Dodecanese villages stay open. The only Greek charter market still active through October.

How does the Dodecanese compare to the Cyclades?

Different. The Dodecanese is south-Aegean, warmer, less Meltemi-affected, more Byzantine and Knights Templar in cultural character. The Cyclades is photogenic-iconic; the Dodecanese is layered-historical. Both worthwhile; different briefs.

Can we cross to Turkey from Rhodes?

Possible - Marmaris (Turkey) is 20 nm east of Rhodes. Requires advance customs notification. Some charters add a Turkish leg (Marmaris, Bozburun) for the cultural diversity. VAT treatment may shift to 24% if non-Greek time exceeds the threshold.
